BS 7671 A4 Implemented: Fire-Rated Cables Must Use Fire-Rated Fixings

2026-10-09 Share

The six-month transition period for BS 7671:2018+A4 (Amendment 4) officially ended on 15 October 2026. From 16 October 2026, all new electrical installations, modifications, and periodic inspections in the UK must comply fully with the A4 version. This amendment elevates fire-rated cable support from a recommendation to a mandatory compliance requirement.

For procurement professionals sourcing cables for UK projects — or for markets that base their wiring regulations on BS 7671 — this represents a compliance threshold that cannot be overlooked.

What Changed in Amendment 4?

375762a8-0e83-4fbb-a1cd-b78a869d0c87.pngAmendment 4 was published on 15 April 2026 and may be implemented immediately. The previous version, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 and the Corrigendum 2023, was officially withdrawn on 15 October 2026. After this date, the standard should be cited as “BS 7671:2018+A4:2026.”

The core change affecting cable procurement is Regulation 521.10.202, which states: “Wiring systems shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire.”

Amendment 4 reinforces this requirement by mandating that cables installed in all areas must be supported using fixings that will not prematurely fail in fire conditions. This means traditional plastic cable cleats, which can melt, drip, or lose their fixing capability at relatively low temperatures, are no longer acceptable in many installation scenarios.

The regulation requires cable support systems to maintain their mechanical integrity for specified durations when exposed to fire, preventing cables from dropping and potentially blocking escape routes or causing secondary ignition sources.

Fire-Rated Fixings: A Complete System

The cable and the fixing are no longer separate procurement items. They must be verified as a complete system — and the fire rating of the fixing must be equal to or greater than that of the cable itself.

Two primary test standards apply:

Test Standard

Test Conditions

Fire Rating Levels

BS EN 50200

842°C propane flame with mechanical shock

PH 30 / PH 60 / PH 120

DIN 4102-12

Up to 1000°C, testing the complete system

30 / 60 / 90 minutes

BS EN 50200 tests the fixing‘s ability to maintain cable support under direct flame and mechanical shock. DIN 4102-12 requires the complete cable management system — including trays, brackets, fixings, and fire-resistant cables — to be tested in a furnace at up to 1000°C, with circuit integrity maintained for the specified duration.

Fire-rated fixings are manufactured from non-combustible materials such as high-quality, corrosion-resistant, fire-rated steel. These fixings maintain structural integrity at temperatures exceeding 1000°C, well beyond the performance threshold of plastic alternatives.

Impact on Procurement

Expanded scope. Previously, procurement teams only needed to confirm the cable’s BS 6387 or EN 50200 test report. Now, the supporting fixings must also carry their own fire test certification. Selecting cables without confirming the fixing’s certification can result in a system that fails project acceptance.

Supplier evaluation. Procurement teams assessing cable suppliers should confirm whether the supplier can provide compatible fire-rated fixings — or at least recommend certified fixing brands. Suppliers unable to offer a complete system solution will be at a significant disadvantage in UK projects.

System-level documentation. Buyers should request combined cable + fixing system test reports, not separate certificates for the cable and the fixing individually.

The BEAMA Guidance

In September 2026, BEAMA (the UK electrotechnical trade association) published its “Prevention of Premature Collapse” guide and a free Technical Specification. These documents define test methods for cable management products to aid compliance with Regulation 521.10.202. The guidance was developed in conjunction with stakeholders including the fire services, London Fire, the IET, and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service.

The BEAMA Technical Specification is available for free download and provides a standardized framework for manufacturers, system designers, specifiers, and installers.

Markets That Adopt BS 7671

BS 7671 is not limited to the United Kingdom. It is also used as a national standard or as the basis for wiring regulations in Mauritius, St Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Cyprus, and several other countries.

In addition, international projects in the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) frequently reference BS 7671 in tender documents as a technical benchmark. Procurement professionals should confirm whether the project’s wiring regulations are based on BS 7671 when assessing whether Amendment 4 applies.

Compliance Checklist for Procurement

Before issuing your next cable enquiry for a UK or BS 7671-based project, confirm the following:

l What is the project‘s required fire rating duration (30 / 60 / 120 minutes)?

l Has the cable been tested to BS 6387 or BS EN 50200?

l Have the supporting fixings been tested to BS EN 50200 or DIN 4102-12?

l Is the fixing’s fire rating equal to or greater than the cable‘s rating?

l Can the supplier provide combined cable + fixing system test documentation?
