PVC, XLPE, and LSZH differ in four areas: temperature rating, fire safety, aging resistance, and cost.
Understand these four, and you can make the right call.
PVC is limited to 70°C. XLPE and LSZH can handle 90°C. At the same conductor size, XLPE carries 15-20% more current than PVC. If your cable trays are tight and you can't upsize the conductor, XLPE gets you more power without increasing cable size.
Short-circuit rating is even more revealing: PVC withstands 160°C; XLPE withstands 250°C.
PVC releases hydrogen chloride gas when burning — toxic, corrosive, and produces dense black smoke. LSZH produces only one quarter the smoke of PVC and releases no corrosive gases.
Hospitals, transit systems, airports, data centers — these projects typically require "low smoke zero halogen" by code. Standard buildings don't.
PVC is thermoplastic. Over time, heat drives out plasticizers — the material becomes hard, brittle, and cracks. XLPE is cross-linked; it doesn't do this. IEEE studies confirm PVC degrades significantly faster than XLPE under thermal stress.
For projects designed to last over 20 years, XLPE is the more reliable choice. Short-term or budget-driven projects — PVC works fine.
LSZH costs 20-30% more than PVC — the premium comes from flame retardants and halogen-free compounds. XLPE sits in between.
The extra cost for XLPE buys you ampacity and life. The extra cost for LSZH buys you safety.
Step 1: Does the spec require "low smoke zero halogen"?
Yes → LSZH — no debate. No → move to Step 2.
Step 2: Is the installation hot or tight on space?
Cable trays packed, conduit undersized, load high → XLPE. Environment moderate, load normal → move to Step 3.
Step 3: How long will the project last? What's the budget?
Over 20 years → XLPE — lower total cost over the cable life. Short-term or tight budget → PVC.

1. Is XLPE worth the extra 30% over PVC?
It depends. XLPE carries 15-20% more current at the same conductor size. If cable trays are full and conduit is already sized, XLPE gets you more power without upsizing — worth it. If space is ample and load is moderate, PVC is fine.
2. Does a hospital project really need LSZH, or can I use it in industrial projects too?
Hospitals, transit, airports, data centers — these require LSZH by code. Standard industrial buildings don't. But if it's an enclosed space with high occupancy (control rooms, electrical rooms with regular access), follow the same standard.
3. Is PVC that dangerous in a fire, or is it safe for normal use?
Safe for normal use. PVC has been used for 40-50 years with mature standards and proven performance. The problem is fire — burning PVC releases hydrogen chloride gas. Above 500ppm, it incapacitates within 3 minutes. That's why LSZH is required in enclosed public spaces, but not in standard buildings or outdoor installations.
4. How much do PVC, XLPE, and LSZH actually cost relative to each other?
PVC: approximately $1,800-2,400 per tonne. LSZH: approximately $2,800-4,200 per tonne — 30-60% more. XLPE sits in between. Don't just compare material price — XLPE can use a smaller conductor for the same ampacity, which sometimes offsets part of the cost difference.
5. If PVC works, is XLPE always a better option?
No. XLPE performs better, but not every project needs that performance. House wiring, general buildings, climate-controlled indoor environments — PVC's 70°C rating is sufficient. Paying for capability you don't need is simply waste. The goal is matching the material to the project, not picking the most expensive option.
